Strengthening industrial 5G growth with 5G-ACIA and NGMN Agreement
Cross-industry collaboration on 5G is vital to shape and promote uptake by vertical industries. With this in mind, the 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA) and the Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance (NGMN) have joined forces to strengthen industrial 5G growth.
Drivers behind the new partnership
- Enhancing cooperation between operators and industries to realise the opportunities that 5G technology offers. The partnership between NGMN and 5G-ACIA gives the technological foundation for new business models that will unleash new markets and growth in the industry, extending far beyond the mobile broadband applications of 5G.
- Dr. Andreas Mueller (Bosch), Chairman of 5G-ACIA: A joint effort with all relevant stakeholders is crucial for unlocking the huge potential that 5G can bring to the manufacturing industry. This partnership will pave the way for a deeper exchange between between the two associations and joint events around the world as 5G becomes reality.
- Dr. Peter Meissner, CEO of the NGMN Alliance: This is the foundation for extended progress and development of 5G for industrial applications. It will build on substantial NGMN work, such as URLLC (ultra reliable low latency communications) for vertical industries and increase mutual understanding of how 5G can better support the industry, key for bringing about significant progress.
Both associations are 3GPP MRPs (market representation partners). 5G-ACIA (set up in April 2018) advocates globally to make industrial 5G a success, with very diverse stakeholders, mainly OT and ICT industries, work together to ensure that the interests of the industrial doman are adequately considered in 5G standardisation and regulation. NGMN (founded by leading international network operators in 2006) has become a leading voice in the 5G industry, driving and guiding the development of wireless innovation.
