Overview of 5G!DRONES Demonstration for UAV Traffic Management

The dramatic growth of unmanned aerial vehicals (UAVs) over the past decade and development of commercial drone activites especially at low altitude poses questiona about safe and secure flight operations in the face of increased air traffic. UAS Traffic Management (UTM) is expected to manage drone traffic at lower altitudes of airspace, providing a complete and comprehensive end-to-end service to accumulate real-time information about weather, airspace traffic, drone registration and drone operator credentals, among other types of data.

Drivers for UTM systems include increasing numbers in airspace, the growing involvement of governments and emerging regulations and collaboration of key stakeholders for the development of a working architecture. In the European Union, UTM systems, level U1 E-registration, E-Identification and Geo-awareness have been mandatory since 2019 alongside level U2.

Resilience to cyber-attacks and overcoming concerns about public safety and privacy are key factors determining the adoption of  UAS traffic management systems.

It is in this context that 5G!DRONES comes into play with its research and development for UAV traffic management. Its demonstration in December 2020 focused on a common functionality for all UAV applications with the safe and secure incorporation of drones into air traffic. The feasibility took place at the Eurecom facility (France) and also used the CAFA Tech facility in Estonia  with the involvement of partners Airbus, DroneRadar SP zo.o, Frequentis AG and Robotics Expert Finland Ltd. Together, they tested how 5G!Drones containers, Communication and Command (C2), U-Space, mission-critical communication system (MCS) and a latency measurement container work in Eurecom servers and the connections with these containers´ client applications in smartphones.

5G Key Perforrmance Indicators

To operate safely and securely, drone applications require extremely low end-to-end latency in the  order of milliseconds.
